For many people, travelling light has become a must, not only because of the need to avoid the surcharges imposed by the companies, but also because of the awareness that, after all, most of the items we take on holiday are superfluous. Upon returning from a trip, in fact, everyone will have happened to realize that some of the clothes or accessories in the luggage have remained unused.
This is why it is useful, both on weekends and on long journeys, to learn how to select what is strictly necessary and to travel light, preferably only with hand luggage. Many people find it hard to believe that it is possible to travel with only one backpack for a week’s holiday, but in reality there are also those who have become accustomed to the “light style” and can no longer do without it, even for trips of two or more weeks and even months. Why? Well, simply because travelling with just one piece of hand luggage has many advantages.
One of the first benefits is undoubtedly the economic one. Travelling with hand luggage alone means travelling low-cost, today more than ever. In addition to avoiding the surcharge for the suitcase in the hold, traveling light you do not run the risk of incurring any surcharges for excess weight and size of the baggage. The rules of the airlines, in particular those of low cost, impose very strict limits on the weight and size of luggage and this means that not respecting these rules you will apply really high surcharges if compared to the price of the flight. And in addition to saving money, you will save valuable time: you will not have to queue at the check-in desk before departure to check your checked baggage and, once landed, you will not have to wait near the conveyor belt what always seems like an endless time, the arrival of your baggage. If the suitcase is not lost, because in that case, in addition to the discomfort of not knowing if and when it will be delivered, you will have to go to the lost property office and then waste more time. From this point of view, traveling with hand luggage only allows you to have everything with you at all times and avoids a possible loss and damage to the luggage, as well as any theft of the content.
All this translates into a more peaceful and less stressful journey. And even more comfortable: once you reach your destination you will have to reach your accommodation on foot or on often crowded vehicles and have a single backpack on your shoulders or a small trolley makes travel much easier. On the other hand, the disadvantage of travelling light is that you have to give up some of what you would like to carry, although there are still some simple tricks to optimize the space available.
Tips for light travel
The list of things to bring on the trip varies according to different factors, such as the climate, the type of trip and destination, the activities you intend to perform, etc.. but of course the basic rule for light travel is to bring only the essential. I suggest you to make a list of what you want to bring and then review it and ask yourself if you really need everything you have marked; at this point make a further selection of objects and put them in the luggage. There are various techniques to optimize space: you can roll up clothes, tie them together, put an object inside each other (for example socks inside shoes) or use cases, all methods that in addition to keeping the contents of the luggage tidier and less creased, compress the objects, reducing the size, and you must also try to use every little space, such as the corners of the luggage or the various pockets. Usually the weight and the bulk is given by the clothes because the rules on the transport of liquids by plane does not make it possible to exceed the necessary on this category of products, for these items you can still decide to buy them directly at your destination, if you do not use special products and difficult to find. The same goes for other items, such as the travel hair dryer or other accessories that are easily and cheaply found almost everywhere.
If you need to wear heavy, bulky clothes or shoes, simply wear them during the trip so they will not affect the weight of your luggage. And don’t forget that the final weight is also affected by the weight of the baggage itself! If you still have to buy your trolley, first of all find out about the size limits imposed by the company you are travelling with and then opt for a piece of luggage that is made of a soft and light material: in this way it will not affect the final weight and you will be able to fill it even beyond its capacity (be careful not to exceed, however!); once on the plane it will also be easier to find space in the cabin “crushing” it a bit.
